To welcome is first to listen

At her farmhouse in the Luberon, Hélène Marchand receives guests like friends passing through. She describes the quiet art of attention.

Portrait in a stone courtyard in Provence

Six rooms, an olive grove and a guest table where conversation stays soft. For fifteen years, Hélène Marchand has run her house by one simple rule: every stay should feel as though it was prepared for a single person.

How would you define hospitality?

As a form of listening. Before guests arrive, I try to understand why they are coming: to rest, to celebrate, to reconnect. Everything else follows from that.

What has changed in what your guests expect?

They no longer want more. They want what is right. A wine from the valley rather than a long list, one recommended walk rather than a catalogue of activities.

Luxury today is being recognised without having to introduce yourself.

How do you prepare an arrival?

With notes. Preferences, allergies, the likely arrival time, the children's names. Small things, but they change the first hour of a stay.

And where does technology fit in?

It should stay invisible. If it frees me to be in the garden with my guests rather than behind a screen, then it belongs.
